Two Poems About My Father by Peter Menkin

I wrote this poem after my father's death in 2000. Surprisingly, he was born on Christmas day and so I recall him when this time of year comes along. There are two poems here. The first tells of my visits to him and the last days of his life, though he struggled on to live beyond what I thought the best thing for him. I wanted a peacable death for him, with no special actions by doctors to keep him alive.

I did not prevail in my wishes and was over ruled by my family. He lived on a respirator for some days afterward, and that grieved me for I believed he suffered and was cheated of a quiet and peaceful passing. I am not bitter about this, since it was the overwhelming wish of my family. Nonetheless,

I was saddened and disappointed that they did not agree with what I saw as religious considerations towards a natural death.

The second poem is about his life and talks of his work as a writer for Television and Radio, which he practiced as his profession from the time he was 19 years old. He was a prolific writer with many credits to his resume. I sent this poem to the Writer's Guild, West, and also posted in some years ago on The Atlantic Monthly Writer's Workshop. The struggle began with a tear,a sign of spiritual gift.

Insight and the groaning inwardly as the

body knew before the implacable

crocodile part of the brain began

to take on the autonomic system.

Death was coming, being held back

with ancient gestures, as the Lord

Himself was present. Above the bed

a vision of the presence of an angel,

hiding the remembered as a story.

This entry to paradise, heaven the God,

the ever present and I am was with

awe approached as a cantor would the voice

listen for the very sounds of serene quiet.

The ever singing welcome and adoration of this

gracious position of the frail old man, waiting,

breathing, knowing, struggling, and wanting.

The wanting to be with the light, to turn

towards the goodnesses, the kindnesses,

the welcome of the warmth in the majestic

and the ark of the covenant held mighty in the birth

of the Messiah, King who gave all for an acceptance

into the Church, and the people. Hold up your hands

like magic moments in prayer, the Saints themselves

sang with this man alone with company on the bed.

Not yet ninety and in a quiet peace of dreams so

bountifully remembranced like an old word about

riding behind cars on a set of skates, and being

in the 20s when Mother was alive, and asking for

his wife who is dead, but here. This is entry

of the living waiting for the words to say goodnight,

you were a good man many times. That is good enough.

I was/am your friend. I came to say "I am sorry.

I will miss you."

We sent many to say we forgive you, a prayer

that we confess for you: a Deacon (morally),

a Chaplain (walked nearby), a prayer book (read

with tender genuine call), a Nun (to see if all

is well), a Priest at a distance to be with you, a

discussion with a Reverend Doctor, a Spiritual

taste of the body and blood, incarnation,and the coming of

grief--yours more than ours for you hold

on despite the presence of angels, a comfort.

Surprise there is a hidden Saint watching,

there is the treasure that bids you

come heavenward,called to paradise and rest sublime to rise.

Toshiba Launches Direct Methanol Fuel Cell in Japan as External Power Source for Mobile Electronic Devices

TOKYO—Toshiba Corporation (TOKYO: 6502), a world leader in the development of fuel-cell technology for handheld electronic equipment, today announced the launch of its first direct methanol fuel-cell product: Dynario, an external power source that delivers power to mobile digital consumer products. Dynario, together with a dedicated fuel cartridge for refueling on the go, will be launched in Japan,  in a limited edition of 3,000 units only, and will be exclusively available at Shop1048 , Toshiba's direct-order web site for digital consumer products in the Japanese market. Orders will be accepted from October 22, and shipping will start on October 29.

The power consumption of mobile electronic devices, including mobile phones, has greatly increased with added functionality, including TV reception and Internet connectivity. As a result, battery exhaustion has become a major concern. Dynario's DMFC delivers almost instant refueling that untethers electrical equipment from AC adapters and power outlets. It runs on mix of methanol and ambient oxygen, and the chemical reaction between the two in the fuel cell produces electricity.

The palm-sized Dynario is Toshiba's first DMFC product. Can I join two difference gauge size cables together without causing any problems?

My son has a new fishing boat and he has asked me to wire up the new navigation lights, deck lights and radio that he bought.
The deck lights and radio came with there own power cable. But the navigation lights didn't. The power cable I have is slightly thicker than the wire coming out of the two navigation lights.

It should be ok. A heavier guage wire is better than too thin a guage. The heavier guage can carry a heavier load (obviously), and shouldn't cause problems. I had to rig up a hot cable for my van battery for a temporary use. It hasn't caused any problems so I haven't gotten around to re-rigging it yet. Works just fine. Going with a heavier guage is always better than going with too light a guage.

Planning a Car Audio System Installation

With such a wide range of components and gadget on the market for car audio systems, the big question is "Where do I start?"

First you must decide what exactly you wish to do. If you are wanting to build a car audio system for a daily driver (the car you drive back and forth to work) with good sounds, but you are not interested in competing, a system can easily be put together for under $1000. However, if you are looking for the all-out bass monster, be prepared to drop in some big bucks into your system.

One of the most important things to keep in mind when building a car audio system is planning. Get an idea of where you are going to place components, subwoofers, amplifiers, and power distribution. A lot of headache can be avoided with the proper planning!!

For the basic system, lets look at some of the components needed.

Let's first start with the head unit (CD player). Obviously you are going to want a nice head unit. If you start with a good quality cd player, and choose to upgrade your sound system in the future, purchase a head unit that will grow with you. Some of the features you may want to keep in mind are:

1. CD changer controls

2. XM / Sirius controls (if you decide to add Satellite radio in the future)

3. Dual RCA outputs (carries signal to the amplifiers)

4. Pause button (important for competing)

5. Detachable face, or other security devices

6. High voltage line driver - this will send the sound signal at a higher voltage to your amplifier/s reducing noise and improving overall sound quality.

After you have chosen your head unit, you will want to make a decision on amplifiers and subwoofers. Keep in mind that you get what you pay for. A $30 subwoofer will be as big as a $300 subwoofer, but the capacities of each will differ greatly. Look at the power handling of each subwoofer and decide accordingly. You will want subwoofers will work with your amplifier/s (see compatibility).

You must also keep in mind the available space in your vehicle. Are you willing to give up your entire cargo area? How many subwoofers will fit? Decide on the size. Sizes will vary from 8" up to 18", some are square (Kicker), but most are round. Also keep in mind the resistance (ohms) of the subwoofer and make sure they are compatible with your amplifier/s (see compatibility). The subwoofer decision will also have an effect on the enclosure you decide to build or buy. For the basic system, I would recommend purchasing a pre-fabricated subwoofer enclosure. This will save you a bit of money and headache (especially if you end up building it two or three times!!). Make sure you take accurate measurement of your cargo area before building or buying an enclosure!!

Other components may be needed depending on the type of system you are building and how elaborate you want your sound to be. For the competition vehicle, figure on upgrading your alternator, adding a battery to your system (maybe more), running high quality RCA cables, power cables, ground cables, and speaker cable. You may need to add a capacitor to provide your amplifier with a reservoir of power for bigger hits from the subs. You may need an electronic crossover, an equalizer, replacement factory speakers, an amplifier for your mid-range and tweeters, additional speakers within your vehicle for staging, etc.

Help, system not working!?

I just moved my system from my Lumina to my saturn. It took a friggin long time and I have decided that this is the last small car I do a system on (I'm 6'2'' and it just doesn't work).

Remote wire gauge is insignificant. Any size will do (within reason). Try temporarily jumping a wire directly from the 12-Volt supply on the amp to the remote terminal.

[For you who don't read very well, I an NOT suggesting he keep it wired this way.]

If the amps come on, you have a break in the wire somewhere.

I have seen cases where a lot of amps can be too much current draw on a remote. In this case, you need to install a Bosch relay to switch the remotes.
