Aquarium Bulb (lighting) Types

Common aquarium bulbs include the:

*T-12; a standard pin, 1-1/2” wide bulb. This bulb will generally use more watts

*T-8; a standard pin, 1” wide bulb. As compared to the T-12, a 48” T-12 will use 32 watts, while a 48” T-8 will use 32 watts.

*T-5; Generally around 13 mm in diameter. This is a mini pin bulb which generally uses even less watts per lumen than many than T-8 bulbs.

*T-2; These bulbs are the latest technology yet. They measure only 7 mm and allow for several bulbs in a small space. A 13 watt 20 inch T-2 Bulb (6400 K) produces 950 lumens which is 73 lumens per watt in a very small space!

Quite bluntly, these T2 lamps and fixtures are about the best bulbs in a small space I have seen! These are very useful for small planted aquariums or Nano Reefs or even shelves for betta breeders. I expect these new T-2 lamps to sweep the smaller aquarium keeping hobby due to their extremely high efficiency and out put.

*VHO; this stands for “Very High Output”. These come in T-5 thru T-12 standard fluorescent tubes and in the newer power compact (usually 4 pin) lamps such as the New generation Via Aqua Helios VHO . The new Helios come in a variety of sizes with outputs up to 180 watts out of lamps under 40 inches in length, which rival many Metal Halide (although not in depth penetration). These new higher output VHO fixtures/lamps have higher Kelvin and wattage output than previous generation VHO lamps/fixtures of similar size. These can be used for both marine reef applications as well as freshwater planted aquariums (these new VHOs are not scheduled for full release to the public until early 2008).

*PC; this stands for “Power Compact”. These bulbs come in straight pin arrangements, square pin arrangements, and the ever more popular self ballasted standard incandescent fixture “screw in” type. These bulbs along with T-5s tend to be the most efficient.

A new Power Compact that in my opinion is awesome for planted aquariums and even for reef aquariums (as an addition to LED or Metal Halide) is the self ballasted SHO PC bulbs. The 105 Watt SHO Daylight bulb puts out 6300 lumens and is comparable to a 525 watt Standard bulb (click on the picture for a link). This comes out to 60 lumens per watt, however this is a deceptive guide, as you can fit many more of these bulbs in a given space and also utilize more efficient reflectors.

The SHO can be mounted into your hood using a standard incandescent fixture or better, hung as a pendant light using reflector similar to how Metal Halides are commonly installed

*Metal Halide (MH); These are the reigning “Kings” of reef aquarium due to depth penetration, output, spectrum, and over all beauty and amount of coral life they help support. Even the newer T-5 lamps cannot achieve the depth penetration and overall output of these lights.

Metal Halide work via a gas mixture of halides and other elements. The actual light production comes from the small bubble of gas that is held in place by metal wires and/or supports. The electricity running between them and the small gas bubble, heats them, similar to an incandescent filament. This is one of the reasons that Metal Halide bulbs give off more heat than other bulbs.

The downside is the heat that MH lights produce, often resulting in the need for hood fans and even chillers. Two sizes I most often have used are the 10,000 K 175 watts and the 20,000 K 250 watts for really deep tanks (over 30”)

*LED: The new reef compatible LED is likely to take over the market as they become more readily available, the price comes down and watts per lumen come up. These lights do not have the heat problems and are very compact. LED lights may prove to be more suitable for aquatic life tank-lighting and reef tanks because they offer superior flexibility when compared with traditional fluorescent lighting. When LED lights operate, the photometric radiation remains within a narrow band on the electromagnetic spectrum. Specific photometric wavelengths are often beneficial to some aquatic plant life and reef tanks. Controlling specific wavelengths becomes possible through a basic network of colored LED lights connected to a digital LED controller. Since LEDs emit light only in very specific direction, the installer has the option to illuminate a precise area by simply rotating the polycarbonate tube casing. The water resistant casing also provides the LED circuitry with adequate protection against moisture and chemicals found within the fish tank or reef tank.

So far the there are mixed reviews on the larger units such as the Solaris that replace the MH. The manufacturer of the Solaris claims “PAR light output levels equal to a 400W MH 20k. It uses 40% less energy than the 400W MH 20k fixtures it replaces. The life of the LEDs is approximately 50,000 hours, so it almost eliminates metal halide and fluorescent bulb replacements. All heat is radiated up and away from the tank; therefore, it does not heat the water like Metal Halides or Fluorescents. This eliminates the need for Chillers.” However data shows 20 lumens per watt, MH bulbs provide around 50 lumens per watt as the output.

HID Xenon Headlights- Safety and Style both

HID, High Intensity Discharge refers to lighting technology that relies on an electrical charge to ignite xenon gas in a sealed bulb, similar to the lightning phenomenon in the sky. HID lighting does not have a filament but instead creates light by igniting an electrical discharge between two electrodes in an air tight tiny quartz capsule filled with xenon gas. HID lighting is also called Xenon lighting, referring to the gas inside the bulb.

The lighting system of a vehicle comprises of lights and signal devices bring together to the front, sides and rear of the vehicle. This system helps the driver to drive the vehicle safely in the dark and determine the position, direction of traveling and speed of vehicle. These days sparkling HID Xenon headlights are in trend which makes your vehicle look stunning.

Now these days most of the car manufactures are starting to offer Xenon HID lights as an option to mid range cars and standard equipment for the top vehicles. Why do my xenon headlights flicker?

I bought an aftermarket pair of 8000k xenon headlights for my 1999 gmc sierra and they flicker not like a strobe, they are constanly on but they flicker just a little bit... What could this be? Do they just need to be broken in more?

I would check for a grounding short, or a problem with the fuse. They may be using more juice than the system allows....

How to light a Film Set

When you start film making for the first time you don't know how to light a film set. Well its very easy to learn, its all about Three types of light And they are the basic foundations of all lighting in film.

That's all. Everything else follows on from there to create a range of effects. But that is all of it, And these foundations haven't changed they've only improved.

The KEY light. It is your main light and your first light. What you do is you place a single light on your subject. Usually its a big one in-order to mimic something like the sun or some other light source. This light brightly reveals your subject, and is the most amount of light in a scene.

Ah, but then your left with all these harsh shadows on your subject. Because Your not done yet, and your first instinct might be to move your "KEY" light to chase them away. Don't do that Instead place your.

FILL light. Its exactly as it sounds you place a second light which is usually weaker than the first to "fill" in these shadows. The light then spreads widely and chases away the shadows. Typically the ones on a person's face, the hollow spots, under the chin, eye sockets are the sort of thing you want to get rid of. You might need to use more than one light to chase away the shadows. Sometimes the ones created by your other lights. Note: a reflector is invaluable with this task.

You might find that if your subject has shadows in his/her eyes they will look less human and sort of un-dead. The principle Is the same for anything else you might light. For inanimate objects and everything. Of course you might want some shadows because they can look cool.

But The problem with film is no matter how much dimension and scope it may have, it is a 2D medium ( normally ) It doesn't look like real life because real life is not flat. You need a

BACK light. you place a light behind your subject ( your subject which is between the camera and the light) shining directly onto your subject. In-order To separate them or it from the background or vice versa. So the BACK of them is lit. Now Your characters no longer look like a flat part of the wall But look closer to real life. Because there is an edge around them; A kind of halo. You could also back light lots of things in the same scene not just your characters. You could back light the desk, a poster, a chandelier, a house anything really.

That's all of them and all other effects are created through manipulating these basic principles. It works because it is simple.

For instance you can create a very nice edge lighting on your subject through half back lighting them. Maybe by placing a light in a specific spot to either side of the actor. In-order to draw attention to the contours of their body or chin. that sort of thing.

If you like you might just want to back light the subject in-order to create a nice simple silhouette. dead simple but dead cool.

I once heard of a very good idea for a Fill technique. This technique is normally for night time  and away from any proper light source you can mimic. For instance a parking lot. What you do is you simply cover the ground with a very light layer of water. The reflective nature of the water will bounce the light back up onto what ever is going on in the scene. Thus acting as a natural reflector or fill light. Most importantly though it will mask the presence of any Unnatural lighting you wish to use (diffused of course)

Your inventiveness from here on is the limit.

Of course after this simple set up there is something you will want to pay attention to. First of all UN-natural lighting looks like it sounds: Un-natural. It won't look completely like the sun or the moon. Even if it is supposed to look unnatural it will look harsh and unforgiving. For almost all lighting set ups you need to soften the light or diffuse it – not reduce the intensity – but soften it with a thin flexible sheet. You can use tracing paper very well I have many times. However There are professional sheets which works much better if your willing to pay.

Now you will find the light isn't driving into your subject and your viewers will be much less aware ( and in some cases not aware at all) of there being any unnatural lighting.

There is more beyond this like gels, warm light, cold light but there is always more. however With this set up explained you now know how to light a scene.

Vw Fog and Tail Lights

Volkswagen’s lighting system is very effective since its early years. In these cars the safety is taking priority. As the name Volkswagen (people’s car) says – this car is not really made for car enthusiasts. It will usually provide great convenience but this car is made to be cheaper and safe.
That’s why the car lighting system will not be as spectacular as other car light systems are but it is still very stylish and it gives a fine look to the vehicle.
We will move trough a few important kinds of lights which you will use in your car. The first I will discuss are called fog lights. From its name – these are lights used in a foggy day. They are auxiliary lights which are usually turned on from a separate switch. They are combined with your tail lights to ensure that others will be able to see you too and prevent some accidents from happening.
This lighting system is pretty important because it provides enough visibility in short range. For example if you are out during a thick fog you will really need them. In many countries where the fog is a daily issue these lights servers very well.
There are many other conditions which will push you to use that kind of lighting system. One other situation could be an extremely dusty terrain. LED Lights for Motorcycles – the Basics

Motorcycle accent lighting is becoming ever more popular.  These lights are beginning to show up on everything from the smallest, least expensive, scooter to the “big bucks” choppers and everything in between.

If you’re thinking about taking the leap and lighting up your ride, there are some important things to keep in mind.

First, quality is everything.  For most things in life, you get what you pay for and motorcycle LED lights and accessories are no exception to the rule.  Make sure the light products (pods and strips) you buy are waterproof, come with sufficient lead wire for ease of installation, and have a Lifetime Warranty against bulb failure.  Note, however, bulb failures are rare in the higher quality products, thus their ability to offer such a warranty.

Second, make sure the wiring for your LED lights is independent of the wiring for the rest of your bike.  This will ensure your factory warranty stays in tact.  Modifications to existing wiring are likely to void your warranty.

Third, make sure you get the right products for your bike and the right products to achieve the look you want.  Most reputable dealers are available to take your calls and are willing to discuss your needs with you before you make the purchase.   Motorcycle LED light products come in different shapes and sizes, different casings (usually chrome or black), and many different light colors.  Not all light products are right for all jobs. 

Fourth, don’t underestimate the importance of the accessories.  Make sure fuse holders and switches are waterproof; industry proven bonding tape is used (3M VHB tape is recommended); and an adhesion promoter is also provided to increase the bonding strength of the tape.

Fifth, make sure the system is such that additional lights can be easily added in the future should you decide to do so.   You may want to start out lighting your engine first and add ground effects or wheel lighting later.  You want the add-ons to fit within your current LED lighting system and be easily accomplished.  Plan ahead “just in case”.

Whether having your motorcycle LED lights professionally installed or buying the kits or individual units to install yourself, doing your homework ahead of time will pay off.  

Remember, your bike is a reflection of you so it’s best to do it right the first time.

my i pod stopped and wont open anymore i tried charging it but it wont work?

i have a fifth generation i pod. while i was listening to some music it just stopped and wont open, like there's no power. i tried to charge it but it doesn't restart or even light

Give your ipod about half an hour plugged into the computer before you decide it's not connecting, my ipod does this often when the battery is really low. If it still isn't working after half an hour plugged in try holding the middle and menu button for about 8secs and it should restart.

Night Vision Cameras. Protection in the Darkest Night

What exactly is the purpose of a security camera, what were they invented for? Well as far as I am concerned as well as any one who owns one or even back to the person/s who invented it was to inhibit criminal activities, to capture the criminal right in the middle of the act on camera. But here is the problem that we face, crime does not only happen in the day but also happens at night but not all cameras work well at night without the aid of an additional external light to aid it. For one thing, it is an extra overhead expense on a companies part and particularly for nature conservationist who use cameras to monitor animals in their natural habitat at night this would hinder there progress. For that specific reason one such camera exist that takes care of this problem, night vision security cameras.

The thing is most security cameras have the ability to produce relatively decent pictures in dim or low light but is an impossibility for them in total darkness, which is the weakness in most cameras. As previously stated this is where night vision security cameras come in, but with one slight disadvantage in that the current generation cannot record in color but in black and white. There is however an option of getting those equipped with a hybrid configuration that allows it the ability to produce color images in good lightning but returns to black and white in night vision mode. This however is an aside considering it does its job and keeps view of the surroundings even in the dark.

There are many shows and movies on television depicting night vision goggles and cameras whereby the image produce is something like a green background or coloring with shadows for images. What you should know though in reality images produced from the night vision security camera are somewhat similar but however the actual quality and detail or the produce images are much more defined and therefore are liked more by people in comparison to what is seen on television.

Is a night vision camera and an infrared camera the same?

Are they? No, they are not he same. Most confuse the two and think that night vision cameras use infrared to film images. However, they could not be further from the truth. Infrared security cameras utilize the heat emitted from an object to aid it in capturing images and make them visible. This in movies is usually depicted as a yellow and red image against a black background projecting the difference in the heat produced between the object in view and the surrounding area. A night vision camera on the other hand however is equipped instead with small light that is emitted to focus on a specific object in order to record the image.

Now if you intend to utilize a night vision camera to view what goes on around an object this should be a job done by an experienced professional or on the advice of one familiar with these cameras. This is so because of external light appearing from the surrounding areas can confuse the camera into thinking there is more light present than really is there. This more or less then obstructs and interrupts the internal mechanism that automatically switches camera modes and renders a disorganized video. Just to say, it fools the camera and makes it use less light than normally needed making it unable to get a proper picture.

All said and done, the price tag on one of these cameras while not exactly ridiculous, still when you look at it is more reserved to locations or to persons who have that extra amount of funds to spend on their personal security.

How to Choose a Hid Conversion Kits – Briefly Introduction

HID lights bring a better light intensity with a lower power consumptions. Many car owners are planning to upgrade their car lighting system from halogen to HID, or high intensity discharger? Four Common HID Kits

1 . Single Beam Kit, comes with 2 pairs of HID bulbs, 2 ballasts.

(if your vehicle uses 2 pairs of bulbs, 1 for low beam and the other for high beam, you can take this single beam hid kit for your low beams.) Common Bulb sizes are H1, H3, H4-1, H7, 9004-1, 9005, 9006, 9007-1 and so on.

2. High/Low Beam - Hi/Lo Kit, comes with 2 pairs of HID bulbs (one HID and one halogen on each HID bulb to perform the high and low beam function, Halogen for high beam and HID for low beam.) and 2 ballasts. Common bulb sizes are H4-2, 9004-2, 9007-2.

3. Telescope Kit: Single HID can switch between high beam and low beam, with 2 ballasts and installation clamps. Common bulb sizes are H4-3, 9004-3, 9007-3.

4. Bi-xenon Kit: 2 HID bulbs on each bulb, which works for high and low beam, with 4 ballasts and installation clamps. Common bulb sizes are H4-4, 9004-4, 9007-4.

Most of the HID Conversion Kits on the market are 35W/12V, you need 24V for a truck. Some hid kits are using 55W, so buyer has to read the specifications carefully.

Color Temperature:

HID Color temperature refers to the degrees (K) , which simply the measures of the color for the lighting output, like golden yellow, white, crystal white, blue …

Degree (k) refers only to the color, while lumen refers to the lighting intensity. So the higher the color temperature (degrees K) doesn’t mean a higher light intensity (lumen). Here is the summary for the common color temperature on the market --

3000K (Golden Yellow) , 4300K (Bright White), 5000K (white), 6000K (Crystal White),8000K (Crystal Blue), 10000K (Aqua Blue), 12000K (Purple-Blue).

How do you make "Moonshiner" tail/brake lights that shut off on a switch?

I have heard many stories about 1940 ford being equipped for liquor running by having a switch that cuts off the brake and tail lights. How you this be done? I figure it's by running a interruption wire but I would love help on how exactly to do this.

um usually a toggle switch under the seat......when i bought my '79 bronco it had 1 for the brake lights and if u clicked on the high beams all the running/tail lights went out.......and the reverse lights were cut out and he had an extra muffler on the truck.........>.<....i guess the Lt colonel i bought it from had a side business......lol

but honestly most modern cars wont work correctly if u did something like this and would take up to 5 switches.....depending on exact make/model...
