Aquarium Bulb (lighting) Types

Common aquarium bulbs include the:

*T-12; a standard pin, 1-1/2” wide bulb. This bulb will generally use more watts

*T-8; a standard pin, 1” wide bulb. As compared to the T-12, a 48” T-12 will use 32 watts, while a 48” T-8 will use 32 watts.

*T-5; Generally around 13 mm in diameter. This is a mini pin bulb which generally uses even less watts per lumen than many than T-8 bulbs.

*T-2; These bulbs are the latest technology yet. They measure only 7 mm and allow for several bulbs in a small space. A 13 watt 20 inch T-2 Bulb (6400 K) produces 950 lumens which is 73 lumens per watt in a very small space!

Quite bluntly, these T2 lamps and fixtures are about the best bulbs in a small space I have seen! These are very useful for small planted aquariums or Nano Reefs or even shelves for betta breeders. I expect these new T-2 lamps to sweep the smaller aquarium keeping hobby due to their extremely high efficiency and out put.

*VHO; this stands for “Very High Output”. These come in T-5 thru T-12 standard fluorescent tubes and in the newer power compact (usually 4 pin) lamps such as the New generation Via Aqua Helios VHO . The new Helios come in a variety of sizes with outputs up to 180 watts out of lamps under 40 inches in length, which rival many Metal Halide (although not in depth penetration). These new higher output VHO fixtures/lamps have higher Kelvin and wattage output than previous generation VHO lamps/fixtures of similar size. These can be used for both marine reef applications as well as freshwater planted aquariums (these new VHOs are not scheduled for full release to the public until early 2008).

*PC; this stands for “Power Compact”. These bulbs come in straight pin arrangements, square pin arrangements, and the ever more popular self ballasted standard incandescent fixture “screw in” type. These bulbs along with T-5s tend to be the most efficient.

A new Power Compact that in my opinion is awesome for planted aquariums and even for reef aquariums (as an addition to LED or Metal Halide) is the self ballasted SHO PC bulbs. The 105 Watt SHO Daylight bulb puts out 6300 lumens and is comparable to a 525 watt Standard bulb (click on the picture for a link). This comes out to 60 lumens per watt, however this is a deceptive guide, as you can fit many more of these bulbs in a given space and also utilize more efficient reflectors.

The SHO can be mounted into your hood using a standard incandescent fixture or better, hung as a pendant light using reflector similar to how Metal Halides are commonly installed

*Metal Halide (MH); These are the reigning “Kings” of reef aquarium due to depth penetration, output, spectrum, and over all beauty and amount of coral life they help support. Even the newer T-5 lamps cannot achieve the depth penetration and overall output of these lights.

Metal Halide work via a gas mixture of halides and other elements. The actual light production comes from the small bubble of gas that is held in place by metal wires and/or supports. The electricity running between them and the small gas bubble, heats them, similar to an incandescent filament. This is one of the reasons that Metal Halide bulbs give off more heat than other bulbs.

The downside is the heat that MH lights produce, often resulting in the need for hood fans and even chillers. Two sizes I most often have used are the 10,000 K 175 watts and the 20,000 K 250 watts for really deep tanks (over 30”)

*LED: The new reef compatible LED is likely to take over the market as they become more readily available, the price comes down and watts per lumen come up. These lights do not have the heat problems and are very compact. LED lights may prove to be more suitable for aquatic life tank-lighting and reef tanks because they offer superior flexibility when compared with traditional fluorescent lighting. When LED lights operate, the photometric radiation remains within a narrow band on the electromagnetic spectrum. Specific photometric wavelengths are often beneficial to some aquatic plant life and reef tanks. Controlling specific wavelengths becomes possible through a basic network of colored LED lights connected to a digital LED controller. Since LEDs emit light only in very specific direction, the installer has the option to illuminate a precise area by simply rotating the polycarbonate tube casing. The water resistant casing also provides the LED circuitry with adequate protection against moisture and chemicals found within the fish tank or reef tank.

So far the there are mixed reviews on the larger units such as the Solaris that replace the MH. The manufacturer of the Solaris claims “PAR light output levels equal to a 400W MH 20k. It uses 40% less energy than the 400W MH 20k fixtures it replaces. The life of the LEDs is approximately 50,000 hours, so it almost eliminates metal halide and fluorescent bulb replacements. All heat is radiated up and away from the tank; therefore, it does not heat the water like Metal Halides or Fluorescents. This eliminates the need for Chillers.” However data shows 20 lumens per watt, MH bulbs provide around 50 lumens per watt as the output.

Changing Your Headlight Bulbs: A Guide To The Most Commonly Asked Car Bulb Questions

If you are looking to buy, replace or even upgrade your headlight bulbs there seems to be an immense amount of advice available. Typically the amount of information that is passed down through word of mouth can be confusing and so listed below are some of these most commonly asked questions and answers.

Should I buy and replace headlight bulbs in pairs?
Yes. This makes good common sense advice for two reasons. Firstly if one of your headlight bulbs has blown it is very likely that the other one will go fairly soon, so if you have taken the effort of changing one bulb you might as well change the other whilst your at it, and then you will not have to repeat the process for a considerable time.

The other reason for changing headlight bulbs in pairs is because as a bulb gets towards the end of its life its light performance is not at its optimum level and so installing one brand new headlight bulb whilst leaving the other old bulb in place will cause a light imbalance, meaning you are not getting the best light performance from your headlight bulbs.

Can I touch the glass when changing the headlight bulbs?
No. No matter how clean your hands are, when you touch the glass you will leave a residue of some of your skins natural oils. When the headlight bulb is illuminated this oil creates a hot spot on the glass and can lead to the bulb failing much earlier than expected.

Top car bulb manufacturers now use toughened quartz glass in their bulbs and so this hotspot issue is not such a factor as it used to be. However it is still good practice to wear latex gloves when handling headlight bulbs to ensure you get the best service life from them.

My car has plastic headlight lenses, does it matter which headlight bulbs I buy?
Yes. If you install headlight bulbs that do not have special UV filtered glass it will very quickly, discolour and eventually damage the plastic lenses. Therefore if you do have plastic lenses on your vehicle make sure the headlight bulbs you buy have special UV cut glass, this will normally be labelled clearly on the packaging.

If I want brighter headlights on the road can I fit high wattage headlight bulbs?
No. Whilst high wattage headlight bulbs can be over twice as bright as standard bulbs, they are not legal on public roads. This is because the incredible bright light they produce can easily temporarily blind on coming drivers.

If you are looking to improve your headlights, you should install upgrade headlight xenon bulbs, these are identical to your existing bulbs but are filled with xenon gas and so emit up to 90% more light, and best of all they are completely road legal.

Is the owner's manual the best way to find out what headlight bulbs are fitted to my vehicles?
Yes and No. Normally the owner's manual will give you accurate information about which type of bulbs you have fitted to your vehicle and their location. However during a production run, vehicle manufacturers do sometimes change the specification, design or parts supplier and so the subsequent bulbs used may differ from the original manual.

Therefore the best way to find out which type of headlight bulbs have been fitted to your vehicle is to remove them and check it visually. Normally the bulb type is printed on the bulbs base.

Buying and replacing your headlight bulbs should normally be a straightforward job, however as is the case with most technical items, being armed with the right information will help you make the decision easier. Fitting the right headlight bulbs, correctly will not only save you money in the long run, but also make night driving safer and less stressful.

G 16 LED globe lights

There are several different kinds of lightboxes to choose from and it is important to consider your options. To assist you in this process, below are some basic differences between three popular bulbs that are common in most present day models. These three lighting systems include LED, T5, and CCFL bulb displays.

For an aesthetically pleasing look, all three light box displays have products to suit every environment. For a very thin illuminated panel, most would choose an LED lightbox display. The reason being, LED lights take up a very small foot print, allowing you to have a light box that looks more like a light panel. Since the newest breakthrough in light box technology is the development of light emitting diodes, or LEDs, most do have a very sleek, elegant look. An LED light panel can be reduced down to 0.83 inches, which is actually less than an inch thick.

If the longevity of your lighting system is your major concern, LED bulbs last longer than all other light box bulbs.

• LEDs generally last an average of 100,000 hours, which is over 11 years of consistent use. The initial cost of an LED light box, in many cases, is much higher; however, if you figure in the savings from time, labor, and bulb replacement over the years with the other displays, you could actually save money in the long run.
• T5 bulbs last about 1.5 years if left on continuously, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Fortunately, bulb replacement is a simple process. That being said, if only one bulb burns out before the others, your display will be aesthetically unappealing to the eye. The burnt out bulb leaves a cold spot or shadow on your light box display.
• CCFL bulbs last 4 to 5 years if constantly left on, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Although they survive for quite a bit longer than T5 bulbs, bulb replacement is much more complex. These displays must typically be returned to the factory for bulb replacement. This is because they are very thin and are installed directly into the light box frame in an intricate manner.

If you are in a business where "going green" is an important factor, CCFL or LED light boxes are the most environmentally conscious displays. In researching the power consumption of a standard T5 light box in comparison with either CCFL or LED light boxes, you will find that the CCFL and LED displays will have tremendous electrical savings. With today's push to be more environmentally conscious, many businesses are now considering these less absorbing lighting systems. Some businesses are even replacing all of their T5 lightboxes with the less economically consuming CCFL and LED bulbs.

If budget and price is a concern, it is essential to take several points into consideration. Let's say that the "apparent budget" equals the initial purchase price. Let's then say the "true budget" equals the actual cost after adding in electrical consumption and cost of bulb replacement.

• T5 light boxes have the cheapest "apparent budget" but their "true budget" is easily much more than the most expensive LED light box after 4 or 5 years of use.
• CCFL light boxes cost only slightly more than T5 displays. However, after just one year, the electrical consumption savings with a CCFL box will be more than the initial cost difference between the T5 and the CCFL display.
• LED light boxes have the most expensive "apparent budget" but the premium can quickly be justified over just a few years. When combining the electrical efficiency, with the 11 year bulb shelf life, and include their appealing look, it can be worth it to invest more money up front for the initial purchase.

After careful consideration and research, you should be able to make the best decision for your business requirements. One thing is evident, light boxes can be used for a variety of solutions in almost any location. Light boxes transform ordinary posters into eye-catching, visual displays. Using innovative lighting systems, both back-lit and edge-lit displays offer an exciting way to get your graphics noticed. Light boxes are ideal display products for retail environments, malls, airports, bus stations, entertainment and even educational venues. Can I run 2 x12v LED MR11 bulbs off a 6v Battery?

How to light a Film Set

When you start film making for the first time you don't know how to light a film set. Well its very easy to learn, its all about Three types of light And they are the basic foundations of all lighting in film.

That's all. Everything else follows on from there to create a range of effects. But that is all of it, And these foundations haven't changed they've only improved.

The KEY light. It is your main light and your first light. What you do is you place a single light on your subject. Usually its a big one in-order to mimic something like the sun or some other light source. This light brightly reveals your subject, and is the most amount of light in a scene.

Ah, but then your left with all these harsh shadows on your subject. Because Your not done yet, and your first instinct might be to move your "KEY" light to chase them away. Don't do that Instead place your.

FILL light. Its exactly as it sounds you place a second light which is usually weaker than the first to "fill" in these shadows. The light then spreads widely and chases away the shadows. Typically the ones on a person's face, the hollow spots, under the chin, eye sockets are the sort of thing you want to get rid of. You might need to use more than one light to chase away the shadows. Sometimes the ones created by your other lights. Note: a reflector is invaluable with this task.

You might find that if your subject has shadows in his/her eyes they will look less human and sort of un-dead. The principle Is the same for anything else you might light. For inanimate objects and everything. Of course you might want some shadows because they can look cool.

But The problem with film is no matter how much dimension and scope it may have, it is a 2D medium ( normally ) It doesn't look like real life because real life is not flat. You need a

BACK light. you place a light behind your subject ( your subject which is between the camera and the light) shining directly onto your subject. In-order To separate them or it from the background or vice versa. So the BACK of them is lit. Now Your characters no longer look like a flat part of the wall But look closer to real life. Because there is an edge around them; A kind of halo. You could also back light lots of things in the same scene not just your characters. You could back light the desk, a poster, a chandelier, a house anything really.

That's all of them and all other effects are created through manipulating these basic principles. It works because it is simple.

For instance you can create a very nice edge lighting on your subject through half back lighting them. Maybe by placing a light in a specific spot to either side of the actor. In-order to draw attention to the contours of their body or chin. that sort of thing.

If you like you might just want to back light the subject in-order to create a nice simple silhouette. dead simple but dead cool.

I once heard of a very good idea for a Fill technique. This technique is normally for night time  and away from any proper light source you can mimic. For instance a parking lot. What you do is you simply cover the ground with a very light layer of water. The reflective nature of the water will bounce the light back up onto what ever is going on in the scene. Thus acting as a natural reflector or fill light. Most importantly though it will mask the presence of any Unnatural lighting you wish to use (diffused of course)

Your inventiveness from here on is the limit.

Of course after this simple set up there is something you will want to pay attention to. First of all UN-natural lighting looks like it sounds: Un-natural. It won't look completely like the sun or the moon. Even if it is supposed to look unnatural it will look harsh and unforgiving. For almost all lighting set ups you need to soften the light or diffuse it – not reduce the intensity – but soften it with a thin flexible sheet. You can use tracing paper very well I have many times. However There are professional sheets which works much better if your willing to pay.

Now you will find the light isn't driving into your subject and your viewers will be much less aware ( and in some cases not aware at all) of there being any unnatural lighting.

There is more beyond this like gels, warm light, cold light but there is always more. however With this set up explained you now know how to light a scene.

If you are planning to drive abroad in the school holidays you need to check exactly what type of car insurance cover you have.

A lady in London was shocked by how much she had to pay out for two minor accidents, even when she had bought insurance for her hire car. The two small scrapes, breaking a headlight and bumping the left wing of her car against a second rental car when parking, would probably have cost her little more than £100 each. Instead, she ended up paying out £1,237 in excess penalties.

When you rent a car in the UK or on abroad, the price includes fully comprehensive insurance but many people are not aware of the inflated excess charges which can be as high as £1,000 on the continent. Online provider, insurance4carehire, confirms this saying almost four out of 10 holidaymakers don't know that they could be liable for these costs.

One way to get the cover you require without is to pays around £69 for an annual standalone policy, available from companies like insurance4carhire which covers all eventualities (including damage to underbody, tyres and windows, which are usually excluded in excess-waiver policies from car hire companies).

Every year three million British drivers set off to the continent, yet the price comparison website uSwitch says that two thirds aren't sure if their insurance covers them or not. Apparently, ten per cent of Britons embark upon a driving holiday with the somewhat cloudy and incorrect notion that driving accidents are covered by our travel insurance. Remember to read the small print, whether you are hiring a car or driving your own.

Mistake number one, if you are driving your own car, is to assume that your own fully comprehensive insurance necessarily provides the same level of cover when you are not in the UK. It does not. EU law only states that insurers are obliged to provide the bare minimum - which means third-party cover. This, of course, will not protect against accidental damage, theft or accident claims and only pays out for damage sustained to another person or car.

Ashton Berkhauer, an insurance expert at uSwitch, reckons that very few of the main providers offer free cover more than three days. The exceptions are eCar and Saga, which both provide driving cover abroad for 365 days a year. Barclays it will charge you £21.50 for up to 90 days' cover, and with Admiral it will cost you £9 for four days and £17 for up to 30.

Paul Baxter of Tescocompare.com recommends that drivers should also make sure they have adequate breakdown cover. Breakdown cover in the UK can cost as little as £30 a year, and the cheapest Europe-wide policy is £69, this covers an annual trip of up to 31 days in Europe (IC Breakdown relating to a 30-year old man driving a Ford Focus with an annual mileage of 12,000).

However, Peter Gerrard of price comparison site Money-supermarket.com points out that some of the less expensive policies (not including IC Breakdown) are fairly stripped-down and you have to pay when the breakdown occurs, then claim the cost back on your return. Single-trip policies can also be bought for about £42 from the RAC, AA and Europ Assistance.

wash car underbody using diesel ?

i was advised to do so, so diesel will penetrate to mechanical parts and will do cleaning and lubrication .

hi, what country are you in? if that diesel goes into the ground you are polluting. unless your car is placed in a special place to collect all that diesel dripping from washing the underbody with a pressure hose. but actually i have seen this done, and find it very unnescesary and bad in the long run. diesel in time will melt and remove the undercoating, soften all rubber bushings and will crack when it dries up. they do this in areas near the ocean. but its no use , the sides of the vehicle will still rust. newer vehicles mechanical parts are now sealed and dont need extra lube except some with grease fittings, which regular lube maintenance is required. so the advise you got is a pre world war ll bad habbit.

I Hate Low Energy Light Bulbs

"I hate low energy bulbs"

Last year a customer returned some low energy lamps she had purchased and asked for a refund. The reason she stated was her husband cannot stand them as they take too long to warm up, do not give off a comfortable light, they are too bulky and he does not care about the environment. Fair enough I thought and so swapped them for some incandescent bulbs.

Well that was then and this is now. What a difference a year makes. There have been some dramatic developments in the manufacturing of low energy bulbs. Not only can you get low energy bulbs with different choices of the colour white ranging from warm white, white and cool white (2700k, 3500k and 4200k respectively) but they now light up almost instantly and are almost the same physical size as their counterparts - the physical reduction in size of CFL (Compact fluorescent light) candles and golf ball lamp has been remarkable!

However that is not all most people will have seen the news earlier in the year when people were, mainly due to the dislike of CFLs, stock piling the 100w GLS bulb on announcement that they were to become discontinued. We do not like being told how to light our homes and due to all the reasons outlined above, disliked the thought of having to use low energy bulbs.   

Well there is now a solution available; the Energy Saver Halogen is the new alternative to CFLs.

An Energy Saver Halogen is essentially a G9 bulb within an outer case.  They light up instantly, mimic a standard incandescent bulb in appearance and can also be dimmed.

But how do they reduce consumption you may ask? Energy Saver Halogens use a higher quality and thinner filament which produces more efficient lumens and maintains a more stable lamp life. (The filament in turn can endure a higher temperature)  By adjusting the mix gas rate inside the bulb, adding more percentage in krypton gas, it provides higher efficiency and therefore burns brighter resulting in up to 30% reduction of running cost.

So soon everyone will be happy. The government may achieve carbon emission targets, energy consumption will be reduced hence reducing our bills, we also have a flexible choice when it comes to lighting our homes and fewer people will "hate low energy bulbs".

IF your taling about the color of the paint then, its because white does not absorb any wavelengths of light, therefore all wavelenths are given off
