• How can I install a Java application on this phone?
  Search the internet for Java files that have the extension .jar (these are executable Java files). Not all of them will work. Some are especially for Nokia or other brand phones. Transfer it to your phone's microSD card as you would normally transfer a file. From the FILE icon, locate your file and select it. Java will take over and ask you if you want to install it. Agree and the application will be installed for you. Enjoy!

  No, this is better than all of them. • This phone has an accelerometer, what exactly is that?
  This is a built-in motion sensor that tracks when the electronic device has been tilted or swiveled. It is a feature most commonly used to change images in a photo viewer or to change tracks in an audio player.
• How long should I charge the battery before first use?
  Before you use the battery for the first time, please charge it for 12 hours.
• Should I load MP3's or WAV music files into my phone to listen to?
  It's a trade off really. With MP3's, you get lower audio quality, but because of its small file size you can fit more into memory. With WAV files, you get CD quality music, but on average, one WAV file is equivalent in size to ten MP3 files.
• Great to hear that the phone comes with 2 batteries. What if I need more batteries, what should I do?
  Simply contact our customer support department to order replacement accessories. Easy peasy.
• How many contacts, can the phone hold?
  The phone itself has the capacity to hold 800 contacts. SIM cards usually hold 250 contacts. Since this phone can hold two SIM cards, altogether you are looking at 1,300 contacts. That's a lot of friends!
• Can I change the ringtone with this phone?
  Definitely. The phone provides for many preset ringtones. Wonderful classics like the Pachelbel Canon and music from Nintendo's Mario Kart video game series, You can also load your own MP3s to act as ringtones or use the phone's sound recorder to record your own voice or sounds as a ringtone.
• I heard somewhere that I can record phone conversations with this phone. How do I do that?
  When a calls come in, you will be presented with an option box. Press that key and a menu will appear. One of the items on the menu will allow you bring up the sound recorder to tape the entire conversation as a sound file for playblack at anytime.
• How do I change my ring tone?
  Tone volume and set up is found by pressing PROFILE icon and not the SETTINGS icon. Once in profile, select GENERAL and then CUSTOMIZE. You will be given the opportunity to change ringing options.
• How do I get the webcam function working on this phone?
  When you plug in the USB charging cable, you'll be presented with a screen to either use the phone as a storage device (for transferring files) or as a webcam. Choose webcam and the phone will display a picture of a webcam. It's now working as a webcam and transmitting what it sees to the screen. If you're using Skype, simply make a video call and you'll be able to see yourself immediately.
• What is Dual Standby and does the Odyssey phone have it?
  A phone which is designed to work with 2 Subscriber Identity Modules (SIMs) are called Dual SIM phones. Of these Dual SIM phones, the ones which allow both SIMs to be active at the same time so you can receive calls on both are called Dual Standby phones. Yes, the CVDQ-M56 is a dual SIM, dual standby phone.
• How does the built-in answering machine work?From the main menu, select the ANSWER icon. You will be taken to another menu that will allow you adjust settings like how long before the answering machine picks up the call and how long your caller's message should be. When an actual call comes through, the answering machine will save your calls to the memory card and you can review them at anytime.
• I hear that the phone has "In Call Background Noise". What is that? As far as sound effects go, if you use this feature - you decide what background noise your caller hears when they're talking to you. You can set the background noise so your caller thinks you're in a restaurant, in the subway or a host of other settings. Perfect for the devious in all of us.
• How can I change the placement of my icons in the main menu? There may be certain icons you want closer to the first page, in which case the Odyssey phone was designed to allow you to move the icons about just like you would do on your computer desktop. Simply place your finger or pen stylus on any icon for more than 3 seconds and all the icons will start shaking. This indicates you are in icon moving mode. Locate the icon you want to move and place your finger or pen stylus on it for more than 3 seconds. It will increase in size indicating that you can move it. Just drag it to the new location. When you're done moving icons, press the black select button at the center of your phone to exit icon moving mode.
• How do I setup a wake up alarm?
  Click on the CLOCK icon. You will have the ability to setup 6 different alarms depending on frequency and day(s) of the week.
• You mentioned that you can setup a different ringtone for each caller on your contact list, how do I do that?
  It's really easy. Simply press the CONTACTS icon on the bottom of your screen and select "caller ringtone". After choosing the ringtone, you'll be prompted to associate it with a particular contact in your phonebook.
• I need to know something really important which no one ever talks about. How does the phone feel in your hand?
  Solid is the best word we can think of to describe the tactile sensation of holding the Odyssey in your hand. As cellphone aficionados, we test our fair share of phones for professional and personal reasons. For us, cellphones that have in the past provided exceptional feel in your hand quality has been any of the Nokia N series especially the N95. Going farther back, the Siemens S40 felt great to hold as well. We're not big fans on the iPhone though because it's too wide and too thin for our tastes. It feels like you're holding a calculator in your hands not a mobile phone! The Odyssey CVDQ-M56 on the other hand is the epitome of a touchscreen phone in a candy bar form factor. It's narrower than the iPhone, but just slightly thicker to give you the impression you're holding something solid in your hand. Of course, the fact that it's well built accounts for that too. But the smooth black face and the rounded chrome corners lends itself to a phone that's as well-designed aesthetically and tactilely, as it operates superbly.
• Can you tell what's the difference between the CVDQ-M56 Odyssey phone and the CVDQ-M50 Voyager phone?
  From the perspective of firmware and functionality, they're almost identical. The Odyssey phone has a larger screen though. It's 3 inches compared to the Voyager which has a 2.8 inch screen.
• At the bottom of the screen there are four main icons: phone, contacts, opera, and music player? Is there any way I can change those or are they permanent?
  Yes, the four short cut icons can be changed. Simply press and hold one of the icons in the main area and the entire icon set will vibrate. Next select the icon you want to become a shortcut and it will increase in size. This shows it can be moved. Then simply drag it into the shortcut icon area and it will replace the one you dropped it on.
• When I am entering the name of a new contact in my phonebook, what is the maximum number of characters I can use?
  You can enter a name that is 14 characters long.
• Where are the accelerometer settings for image rotate?
  Image rotation is achieved by viewing a photo and touching the screen. A rotation icon appears that allows you to switch from portrait to landscape mode and vice versa.

got my phone yesturday very impressed of how small it is for what it can all do! after spending a day with it to get to know my new fun phone, this is by far the best phone i ever had! I recomend this phone to anybody who wants a tech swavy phone with out breaking your wallet. me living in the usa, the tv app dosent work cause its anolog signal not digital signal and camra not the best, but its takes ok pictures. but other than that. BUY THIS PHONE!!!!!!! YOU WILL BE PLEASED!!!!

Does Dual Channel memory work with different pairs of ram?

So i have a 1gbx2 Crucial Ballistic 4-4-4-12running on DC in my system right now. Im planning to get another pair of ram from a DIFFERENT company, will both of them run on Dual channel separately? Or would none of them run on DC anymore?
I am asking if it will still be considered Dual Channel. If i have 1gbx2 of XMS2 and 1gbx2 of crucial ballistic. And putting each pair in its DC slots.

If its from a different company it should still work just fine. Good luck =]

Portable GPS, leave it in your car?

I just bought a portable gps, an InVion touchscreen. Do most people leave it in their cars, or do you take it with you when you go? My car has an alarm, but I would hate for someone to break my window to steal the gps system. (idk if it matters, but I have an '08 scion tC)

what is the best aftermarket in dash navigation for BMW x5?

I have non navigation,non DSP,non Bluetooth BMW x5 3.0i 2002. I want to get in dash navigation for it,which plays MP3 files and still supports steering wheel controls and has bluetooth connectivity and ofcourse GPS itself Any suggestions? Ok what can I tell you. I have BMW x5 4.4 2002 so I know what I am talking about. First broblem you are going to have is doble din dash kit some person is selling it for $470 each on ebay. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You can find doble dash kit cheaper I would say between $150-$250 but still it is going to look bad. I changed my speakers through out my car put couple of subwoofers and install two head rest dvds. trust me is it gooooooood. Good Luck.

Sound Cards and Computer Interface Hardware for Guitars

As my interest grows on the subject of using computers for recording purposes or for creating effects or anything your imagination dreams of, it seems like time to Discuss and briefly brake down into terms you understand the options available such as the PCI, Firewire, USB 2.0, Cardbus, USB 1.1 setups.

If you are using PC software, get a desktop system. If running Mac software, the Mac desktops do it best. Ifit has to be a laptop, get a Mac. If it has to be a PC laptop, do firewire, USB 2.0, or a cardbus. Or consider using onboard sound with various adapters and connecting a small preamp to the line inputs.

USB 1.1
Perhaps the most well-known USB 1.1 interface is the Mbox2Mini, which runs Pro Tools LE. If you want to run that, make sure your laptop meets or exceeds Digidesign qualifications, which you can find at the Digidesign site. There is the M-Audio MobilePre USB Portable Audio Interface and Fast track Pro USB interfaces and the original Tascam US 122 which uses USB2.0.

USB2.0
The newer form of USB, based on the 2.0 spec, is theoretically capable of slightly exceeding the speeds and throughput of firewire, so USB2.0 devices can make good solutions for laptops or desktops that sport a USB 2.0 interface. There is a huge world of difference between USB 1.1 and 2.0. Never confuse the two; it's night and day difference in terms of performance.. Also never assume an interface is USB 2.0 unless it specifically says it is. If it just says USB, then assume it is 1.1. Believe me, if it was 2.0, they would tell you. There are more USB 2.0 interfaces out, though it is changing. Some notable USB2.0 interfaces are the Tascam US122L and Tascam US144. There is also a version of the MOTU 828mk2 that is USB 2.0 instead of Firewire. Newer to the scene are the Emu 0404 and 0202, and the Alesis IO2.

CardBus
Solutions are for laptops. One way is to get an RME Cardbus solution. The Cardbus connects via a typical Firewire IEEE1394 cable to a breakout box such as the RME Multiface. Because the Multiface handles most of the processing, the CPUs task is eased and good performance is possible. Read more at RMEs website. Emu has released the 1616 laptop audio interface. There are other cardbus solutions. Ask yourself one question before going with a Cardbus solution, why get this rather than firewire?

PCI and PCIe
PCI (and PCIe for those with late model desktop Macs) interfaces are for desktop systems, not for laptops. Lynx, RME and MOTU on the pro end. Emu's desktop series, M-audio's Delta series, and the Echo series are all respectable. On the inexpensive side the emu 1212M and M-audio 2496 are known performers. Also check out the PCI version of the Emu 1616M. Note to use a PCI card you have to have an open PCI slot on your computer. While I know that seems obvious, nowadays some computers are sold without PCI slots. Believe it, so check!

Firewire
Good for laptops or desktops. Motu has released the Traveler, a portable, but full featured audio interface. You can actually power the thing from the firewire port itself, or by battery power which I discuss in the article Beware of Proprietary Connections When Buying Guitar Gear and Equipment, which is good for recording on the road. Heh, you could record Rainy Days on a rainy day!

Need something more portable? Check out the PreSonus FP10 FireWire Recording Interface. The Firebox can also be powered off the FW bus. More for professionals are the MOTU Ultralite and the Focusrite Saffire. Examine the inexpensive Firewire Audiophile 2496 and Firewire Solo. Among the newer firewire audio interfaces that hold promise are the Yamaha GO46, the Onyx Satellite, Alesis IO14 and I026. The Alesis just mentioned have an incredible amount of i/o for the price. A really cool product just arriving now is the Tascam FireOne. As you see there is no shortage of choices.

Wanna have a big interface to go with your laptop or desktop computer? You can run the control surface/interface combos such as the project mix, Digi 002, Tascam FW1884 or the Mixers with built in and add on firewire interfaces like the Onyx mixers, the Alesis Multimix firewire mixers and the Phonic Helix FW mixers as well.

The most popular picks that balance plenty of features with affordable pricing is the MOTU 828mkII FireWire Audio Interface for my Mac Pro and the Intel-based Macs. For the PC, if one were buying today, the 19th of February, 2008 I would get a RME Fireface 400 FireWire Audio Interface

That being said, what does this mean in terms of buying a sound-card or audio interface?
Needless to say, make sure there is clear evidence that the product Has:

1. a driver for your OS. Never presume it does.

2. a driver that insists it works with your application, like Logic, Cubase SX or Sonar.

3. a valid website where you can download drivers

4. an updated driver within the last 6-8 months and supports the latest service packs and OS updates.

5. Looks like driver development is something they take seriously for your computer platform. A company with continuous development. A company may make great cards for PC and says we have a Mac driver too!

6. Looks like they have a good working relationship with software makers, and in product bundles.

It's all too common for new products to have driver issues. Avoid the latest stuff that came out last week. Let someone else be the guinea pig. Don't hesitate to return products that do this especially if you downloaded the latest update and it still has bugs. Remember to always download the latest driver when you get your interface. Do it first, or don't complain.

what is the role of the interface in any control system?

A very clever ambiguous question, indeed! Interface has different meanings in different contexts and fields of engineering.

Here, in computer programming and design, we do not have a clear definition for "control system". Interface is a set of well known properties, methods and events grouped under a single name which makes the objects share a set of behavior despite their differences in their classes.

In control engineering, I haven't heard the concept of interface, and know nothing about it. But control system is well defined.

In electronics engineering, interface is a term used for a specialized intermediate (go-between) electronic circuit which matches two different blocks or pre-designed electronic circuits which are supposed to work together, but they are not technologically perfectly matched.

What is cabling? Cabling is the foundation of your network, it is the medium that connects all your computers and servers together and is probably one of the most important and often overlooked items in business networks. The process begins by installing a twisted pair cable made up of twisted wires surrounded by a protective jacket to connect data lines to a computer or other network component. The cables are run through ceilings and walls, out of sight, and link a data/phone drop to a patch panel, or other termination block often installed within a rack in a server room or telecom closet. Simply put, cabling is used to link together computers so they may form a common network and communicate seamlessly with one another.

Anatomy of a typical cabling installation:

• The cable begins its run from the central termination point or MDF (Main Distribution Frame) and extends through the building to an outlet.
• The outlet is terminated with a keystone jack (RJ-45 jack) rated for the type of cable you are using.
• A patch cable is then used to connect the RJ-45 workstation area outlet (WAO) to a computer or other device network capable device like an VOIP enabled phone.
• In the server room, MDF, or telcom closet, cables are terminated on a patch panel and the corresponding numbers will be aligned to ensure easy identification. A floor or wall mounted rack (typically 19? wide) may be used to house the patch panel depending on the rooms design and space requirements.
• Finally, cable testing will be done to guarantee everything is in working order, and certification testing may also be done to ensure compliance with industry standards

Once your office is properly cabled, efficiency is sure to increase and any additions or changes to the cabling system will be easy to accomplish. So how do you get started? There are several variables that must be considered before you begin. The first is what type of cable will be used. There are various cable types and using the correct one is critical. As technology advances, cable protocols are becoming faster and better.

• CAT3 – An unshielded twisted pair (UTP) configured to carry data up to 10 Mbit/s, with an attainable bandwidth of 16 MHz. Popular in the early 1990’s but now considered obsolete, it decreased in popularity due to the favoring of the high performing CAT5.
• CAT5 – A twisted pair high signal integrity cable that is capable of upholding frequencies up to 100 MHz. Within a category 5 cables are 4 twisted pairs in a single cable jacket. This use of balanced lines helps keep a high signal to noise ratio and considerably reduces crosstalk interference.
• CAT5e – An improved version of Cat 5 that increases specifications for far end crosstalk and all new installation should be at least CAT5e
• CAT6 – A cable structure for gigabit Ethernet and additional network protocol that is backwards compatible with CAT3, CAT5, and CAT5e. CAT6 features stricter blueprints for crosstalk and system noise. CAT6 provides performance up to 250 MHz.
• CAT6a – An improvement on CAT6, CAT6a operates at frequencies up to 500 MHz and can carry 10 Gbit/s operations up to a maximum distance of 100 meters. CAT6a also improved conditions particularly in the area of crosstalk.
• CAT7 – Backwards compatible with CAT5 and CAT6. CAT7 introduces even more exacting specifications for crosstalk CAT6 or CAT6a. Shielding has been added for individual wire pairs, and the cable as a whole to achieve this. CAT7 has been created to allow 10 – gigabit Ethernet over 100 meters of copper cabling, and is capable of running at frequencies up to 600 MHz.

After you have selected your cable speed requirements you have to determine with jacket type is required for your particular installation:

• Plenum – Plenum is a type of cable jacket that is not only extremely fire resistant, but also emits a far less toxic smoke should it catch fire. Some buildings and building codes require this as a precautionary measure in case of fire. The name plenum refers to the air conditioning, HVAC systems installed in buildings used to pull air out of once area and blow it out at another. If there happened to be toxic smoke in the air, imagine how quickly it could be pumped throughout an office building with some of these large suction systems in use. Although not as safe as plenum jacketing, PVC works at the same speed and is the same quality of cable. For standard home use, PVC might not be a bad choice, but for a populated business office, or a large public facility such as a hospital or a library, PVC would be a recipe for disaster due to the combination of HVAC systems and high number of people that would be exposed to the toxic fumes.

Another important factor to consider is what type of ceiling you have in your building. This will directly affect how the cabling will be installed.

• Drop Ceiling – with a drop ceiling, cabling is as easy as sliding a ceiling tile open and running the cable through. This type of ceiling allows for the cables to be easily hidden and is the least difficult to work with and is dominant ceiling type in most commercial buildings.
• Open Ceiling – an open ceiling requires meticulous attention to detail being that the cables and beams will be exposed and time must be spent to make the cabling aesthetically pleasing.
• Hard Ceiling – If you have a hard ceiling, the cabling job will be the most difficult. Cabling a hard ceiling is far more work than cabling a drop ceiling, which makes for a more expensive and time consuming job. Few commercial buildings have hard ceilings, but nearly all residences do.
