which radar detector do I get, what speed radar/laser guns are used commonly?

I am going to buy my girlfriend a radar detector for christmas and Im deciding in between two different ones. one is a 12 band and the other is 14 band. If I get the one that is a couple bands lower will it matter? Will it depend on whats used in my area?

No if you go with the one with a couple bands lower it wont make a huge difference. Also you may check to see if laser jammers are illegal in your area, they are good to have since cops are now starting to use laser instead of radar in some areas and states.

how to divert the power cable on a radar detector from dragging across my head unit when plugged in?

i just bought a cobra radar detector and im a bit of a perfectionist. it bothers me that the power supply cable drags from the windshield across the head unit and into the cigarette lighter. i need ideas on how to hook up the detector because it needs to be plugged in to work but not have the cord out in the open. thanks

Mount the detector on your sunvisor. Run the power cord fromt eh detector under the edge of the headliner and down the A-pillar next to the windshield (you should be able to remove the plastic over the A-pillar and run the cord behind it.) Cut the cigarette lighter plug off and wire it into the fuse panel to a switched 12v source (something that comes on when the car is cranked)(radio, etc). That will allow the radar detector to power on when the car is cranked and to power off when the car is stopped.

I wired all of mine like this and never had any problems with any of them.

but the real answer is they confiscate your device and you get a 100-1000 dollar fine
And also the police have radar detector detectors so watch out.
What I do is I just bought a GPS unit and there is a POI file you can put into it with common speed trap places in Ontario listed so you get warned when entering a hot zone. If you want the file lemme know.
