Whiplash Stilll Occurs In Auto Accidents. Avoid Injury Like A Professional Driver!

A rear end crash occurs every 17 seconds in the U.S. and a soft tissue injury called whiplash is often the result. An estimated 2 million insurance claims are filed each year; 200,000 of those are serious enough to cause long-term medical problems. But what exactly is whiplash? What can we do about it and how safe are our cars?

Whiplash occurs when the soft tissues of the neck is injured by a sudden "whipping" of the head. This sudden motion strains the muscles and ligaments of the neck beyond their normal range of motion. Even though you may be wearing a seatbelt, the belt will keep your body from moving forward but the head may snap forward, then backward, causing pain and sometimes serious long term pain.

In addition to neck pain, other symptoms may include neck stiffness, injuries to the muscles and ligaments, headache, dizziness, or shoulder or back pain. Some also experience cognitive, somatic, or psychological conditions such as memory loss, concentration impairment, sleep disturbances, and depression.

Since 1969, some type of headrest has been mandated in the U.S. However, accident reconstruction and other automobile research through the years have resulted in important manufacturing techniques to make them even safer for occupants involved in a crash. In December 2004, National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, NHTSA upgraded its requirements for head restraints so that they are higher and closer to the back of people's heads.

It is a common misconception that head restraints are actually a resting place for your head. Head restraints are an essential safety feature like lap/shoulder belts. Effective head restraints help move an occupant's head forward with the body in a rear-end crash and decrease the likelihood of sustaining a whiplash injury. Head restraints should be positioned high enough to protect the head so as to minimize neck distortion. A head restraint should be positioned at least as high as the head's center of gravity, or about 3.5 inches below the top of the head. Because people differ in height, the amount of adjustment varies. For some occupants, no adjustment from the lowest position is required. The distance from the back of the head to the restraint should be as small as possible, preferably less than 4 inches.

While head restraints have improved dramatically over time, when buying a new car, it is wise to get the best possible crash rating available. Check with the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, www.iihs.org for its rear end crash/ head restraint ratings. Which amp should i go with?

I just got 2 new subs that are 1200peak & 600rms a piece, so 2400peak & 1200rms total, and i was wondering which amp i should get for them? I was debating between a couple of different class d monoblock amps. Which one should I go with?? Or r there any amps better that i haven't listed?

Any of the amps you list is a good choice.

Some things you may not be aware of....

If your total system power is 1200 watts RMS or more, you will need to:

1. Upgrade the "Big 3" - that is to replace (or add to) the power wire between the battery and alternator, the ground from the battery to the chassis and the ground strap from the engine/tranny to the chassis.

2. Upgrade to a yellow top battery

3. Upgrade the alternator to a high output alternator

Failure to do this will result in the early death of the alternator as it will eventually fail.

A second battery is never a good idea as it's an added strain on the alternator to charge two batteries AND supply power for the car. The ONLY time a second battery is useful is if the audio system is to be used with the car off.

A capacitor is only good so far as the audio system isn't trying to pull too much from the electrical system. A cap doesn't provide more power, it's designed to 'stiffen' the voltage to the amp, nothing else. If the current isn't there, a cap won't help.

The alternator must have at least 20% more amperage power than the entire vehicle and sound system combined for a cap to be of benefit which is ironically the same requirements for an amp to be efficient.

I should mention it doesn't do this every time I drive. It has happened twice so far, about a week apart.
I should also mention that no engine lights have appeared.

Many possibilities, you'll need to get it diagnosed to determine the true cause.

Possible causes include:

Bad MAP sensor
Bad Throttle Position Sensor
Vacuum leak (cracked intake manifold, bad intake manifold gasket)

Clean the Throttle plate. It may be sticking, which is why it only occurs ocassionaly.

KDC-MP145 : KDC-MP145 I Love this Product!

I bought this KDC-MP145 for just $54 from amazon (plus $20 shipping) & it definitely beat my expectation as far as sound quality is concerned.

My review is mostly based on the comparison with Pioneer 1900MP player that I owned previosly.

Pros:
Great sound quality.
The cheapest among the great brands such as Pioneer, Sony, Alpine, Kenwood itself,..etc.
Plays various formats esp wma. This played wma files (each 2hr duration) that wasn't recognized by my old pioneer.

Pause button - My old player had it only in the remote control. To stop the music in my old player, I either had to hold the power key few seconds or change it to AUX mode.
btw this (KDC-MP145) does not come with remote control, however I don't need one for something that I can reach with my hands!

Cons:
Couldn't read display during sunlight.
Control buttons (1-6) are a bit too small.
No power off button. Have to press SRC twice (from CD mode) to switch it off.
Audio controls where a bit confusing initially but now I got used to it.
Search operation - KDC-MP145 has got a "One folder level up" button, just like windows explorer, which is very useful when you play a music CD with complex sub folder system.

However most of the CDs that I have only has folders at one level. So to browse the folders, I have to press the Search button, then press "Folder level up" and turn the knob left or right to browse. My old pioneer had buttons for going folder up/down which would be more convenient for this situation. (btw the band button skips folder in Fwd direction).

What are good Brand Car Audio Speakers?

I have a 2002 Honda civic Dx Coupe and i was wondering what are good brand speakers that i could put in to replace my stock ones. I would like something that is inexpensive and the quality has to be good and something that has good bass also. Right now i have an aftermarket Sony xplod deck that i just bought a few days ago. I was thinking that Alpine speakers would work but im not sure.

Alpine has the best head units for the money, as far as the rest of the components go stick with JL or Alpine. They're great, reliable, and long lasting.

Im car audio retarded?

I have 2 10' MTX Road Thunder II's hooked up to an old Kenwood KAC-848. I had 2 JBl's 2' speakers on the top of each MTX truck box but have since disconnected them. The problem Im having is my amp is getting freakin hot and blowing fuses if I even attempt to turn the radio up. I have a Kenwood KDC-205 in dash stereo. If you can fix me, I'll send you a Christmas card

That will happen when the speaker impedance is too low. If the amp is 2 ohm stable and you have an impedance total of 1 ohm, the speakers will draw more current than the amp can safely supply. Keep your impedance equal to or greater than the stability limit.

These wires are usually painted black in color. Center console has screws attached to it. These screws are removed by the use of screw driver and the console after being taken out is kept separately.

The stereo that we need to replaced is removed and the harness for wiring is disconnected. The wire of antenna is also taken out from the rear side of the system. Now all these steps should be done in reverse for installation of new stereo. The harness for wiring is attached to the stereo to be installed. This connection is made by adapter for wiring harness.

In the same way wire for antenna also needs to be connected to the rear side of the stereo system. After all these are done the stereo is put into dash.

The last step we should supply power. This can be done by again connecting wire to the battery. The wire is to connected to the negative terminal. This wire will be present usually in black color. The job is done. However it is better to make a final check to see if we have finished installation of new stereo perfectly in our volvo. Just switch on radio. If it plays properly we should pat ourself because we have now become half professional. If it does not work let us not worry . Check if all connections and disconnections are done correctly. The only place where it is little risky top work with is the live wires. So ensure that the battery is switched off.
