To overcome the differences between the two types of surveillance systems, designers can use commercially available IP camera with a recorder function or DVRs with network functions often more advanced than those typically integrated into network cameras. Mutual complementarity means that systems based on analog cameras and DVRs, and IP-based, can be used interchangeably, depending on the preferences of investors.

There are, however, a feature not available in systems based on analog cameras and DVRs. This is a much higher resolution images. The analogue television systems (PAL, NTSC) limited to a maximum of 720 x 576 pixels (PAL). Is the maximum number of points in the image.

With digital technology there is no such restriction. Any image size is possible if the camera supports it. Thus the basic resolution of the image depends only on the parameters of the camera.

As an example, let's examine a car park. To read the registration numbers of vehicles, we have about 130 pixels per sq. of the actual size of the object observed, ie a car. It follows that if the parking is 50 meters long and the system is analogue (720 pixels), 9 cameras are not needed. In the If the cameras with resolution of 1.3 Megapixel (1280 x 1024) only 5 will the same for 2 Mpix camera – only 4 are necessary. Importantly, high-resolution cameras also cover a larger area vertically.

A smaller number of cameras has many advantages. First, it reduces the cost and installation time and maintenance. After all, each one requires a lens of the camera, housing and support. Another argument is the demand of transmission channels. In digital systems, each device form a channel regardless of type. Less cameras also means lower operating costs – is easier to carry out surveillance with fewer points.

Of course, there is another alternative for megapixel cameras – popular speed dome / camera PTZ. With the proper lens is even possible to cover the area defined with a single PTZ camera. However, this solution has many drawbacks. First, the camera can only be set in one of two ways:

– The first gives an overview without the possibility of recognizing some important details, for example, the license number of a car. Using optical zoom, we can ensure the ability to identify the details, but at the expense of losing the rest of the scene.

– The second way is the activity of the operator who must decide what is interesting at the moment and focus on that area. In the case of fixed cameras, not always available in a box complete (whole image) with all the events recorded by the system.

Does anyone know the point of cars CCTV smart councils are employing?

I live in the council area Lambeth, London. Every day for three months there was a smart car with a camera closed circuit television sitting at the end of the road. We are an area very low crime, a police station less than three right turns away. However, this car sat every morning with two guys in it. He faced an input signal to any other way it could have been accessed since it joined in a T-junction, if not for the entry of any sign. I've never seen a car pass ignore the signal, so I'm assuming it's not for you. The car left a month ago and has been back a couple of times. Who was present at another long period in the beginning year. Does anyone know what the Council to use, it's normally gone after 8pm so its not there to record any behaviors criminal. The old man knows everything, unfortunately, they enhance the side with the logo of the Council.

It could be for anything. Unfortunately, the government opened gates when allowed the use of CCTV in combating crime. Local councils have taken to the nth degree N with the excuse that the litter fall, litter wrong wrong tray, dog fouling, make the wrong direction to get his son in a different school catchment area, etc are all crimes that warrant the use CCTV.
